Two Boys and an Orange

This package presents a conflict resolution exercise that introduces some of the key principles in addressing the causes and possible solutions to situations of conflict. It uses a traditional approach of developing a metaphorical framework for exploring trajectories of conflict and the multivariate consequences of their outcomes.

The core symbol used in this structured exercised in a single orange, whose possession and use is contested by two small boys. The simplicity of this scenario belies the complexity of its multiple referents.

The orange can represent any contested resource or object of value that the observer wishes to connect it to. The orange can symbolise the source of a conflict between two persons, between two communities or between two nations. Exploring the resolution of its disputed ownership can be about resolving an argument between two friends or about finding peace between two warring societies.
